Soil microorganisms as controllers of atmospheric trace gases (H2, CO, CH4, OCS, N20 and NO)

Article Abstract:

Majority of the trace gas production and consumption processes in soil are due to microorganisms, and microbial metabolism appears to control the trace gas flux between soil and atmosphere. Trace gases, H2, CO, CH4, OCS, N2O and NO, play roles ranging from growth substrates to cometabolites and stoichiometric products in the microbial metabolism. Trace gas surveys reveal wetland soils as important CH4/NO/N2O sources and upland soils as NO/N2O sources as well as H2/CO/CH4 sinks. Most of the trace gases not only serve as electron donors in oxidation reactions, but also yield biosynthetic energy.
