Somatotype and indicators of metabolic fitness in youth

Article Abstract:

413 boys and 343 girls 9-18 years of age were examined to determine the relationship between physique and metabolic fitness. Physique was determined by using the Heath-Carter anthropometric somatotype. Plasma triglyceride levels (TG), blood glucose levels (GLY), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were used as indicators of metabolic fitness. Results indicated that a body characterized by high endomorphy and mesomorphy is linked with higher levels of TG, GLY, LDL-C, and lower levels of HDL-C.

Adolescent spurts in body dimensions: average and modal sequences

Article Abstract:

Growth spurts in adolescents are extremely variable. Researchers measured growth spurts in 11 body dimensions on 101 adolescents, 52 males and 49 females. Measurements were taken quarterly throughout adolescence. Growth spurts were extremely variable except for growth in leg length, which usually preceded growth in stature in males. In females, these spurts occurred around the same age.

Urban-rural contrasts in the physical fitness of school children in Oaxaca, Mexico

Article Abstract:

Results of the urban colonial and rural indigenous community in Oaxaca comparisons in physical fitness vary when absolute physical fitness scores or age- and body size-adjusted physical fitness scores are compared. The observed differences may be related to activity habits associated with school physical educational and lifestyle in the respective communities.
