Sources of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in a cold-smoked rainbow trout processing plant detected by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing

Article Abstract:

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing was used in detecting sources of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in a cold-smoked rainbow trout processing plant. The contaminated sites were found by sampling the production line, environment and fish at various production stages. It was discovered that cases of fish contamination rose after brining and the most contaminated sites in the plant were the brining and postbrining areas. The use of hot steam, hot air and hot water eliminated Listeria contamination. Samples taken five months after an eradication program was implemented show no signs of L. monocytogenes.

Biodiversity of Clostridium botulinum type E strains isolated from fish and fishery products

Article Abstract:

Clostridium botulinum type E strains isolated from fresh fish and from different types of fishery products and seafood were characterized via pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis. The objective is to examine the biodiversity of type E strains and to evaluate the effects of fish species, processing and geographical origin on the epidemiology of the isolates. Results showed a high genetic variation, which is surmised to be a result of a lack of strong selection factors that would influence the evolution of type E.

Prevalence of Clostridium botulinum in Finnish trout farms: pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing reveals extensive genetic diversity among type E isolates

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on trout farms in Finland to investigate the prevalence and distribution of Clostridium botulinum in these farms and their fishes. Results show that spore counts and prevalence were higher in marine fishes than in the freshwater ponds with sediment suction devices. Moreover, the pulse-field gel electrophoresis typing of 42 Clostridium botulinum E isolates suggests an extensive genetic diversity.
