Staphylococcal coagglutination, a rapid method of identifying infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus

Article Abstract:

A staphylococcal coagglutination test for identification of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) in cells culture and tissue samples of infected fish was evaluated. The test used Staphylococcus aureus sensitized with rabbit polyclonal anti-serum to the IHNV isolate. Results showed that fivee electropherotypes of IHNV isolates induced coagulation of the S. areus cells. This was attributed to rabbit antiserum binding to N and G protein epitopes that were common to all the virus isolates. The coaggulation test was specific, simple and fast when compared with other IHNV detection methods.

Diversity of toxic shock syndrome toxin 1-positive Staphylococcus aureus isolates

Article Abstract:

Staphylococcus aureus isolates from women with nasal, anal, or vaginal colonization evaluated for population diversity by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis is discussed. Results indicate that TSST-1-producing strains of S. aureus isolated from the anterior nares, anuses, or vaginas of women are less diverse than non-toxic-producing strains from the same sources over a large geographic area.

Recombination-deficient mutants of an extreme thermophile, Thermus thermophilus

Article Abstract:

Recombination deficient strains of the extreme thermophile thermies thermophilus are prepared from a leucine-isoleucine mutant strain (NM6), the availability of which may provide good sources for work with plasmid vectors. The sensitivities of the mutants to UV and mitomycin indicate that mutation occurred during recombination which is one of the stages of the transformation event.
