Synchronous effects of temperature, hydrostatic pressure, and salinity on growth, phospholipid profiles, and protein patterns of four Halomonas species isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vent and sea surface environments

Article Abstract:

Studies done to examine four strains of euryhaline bacteria belonging to the genus Halomonas for their response to a range of temperatures, hydrostatic pressures, and salinities are reported. It was found that the Halomonas strains examined were psychrotolerant and piezotolerant, as they were able to grow only slowly under cold deep-sea conditions with the medium employed and the growth rates for all of the Halomonas strains were found to be higher under the cool to warm conditions that characterize deep-sea low-temperature hydrothermal fluids and associated subseafloor environments.

Methane- and sulphur-metabolizing microbial communities dominate the Lost City hydrothermal field ecosystem

Article Abstract:

Serpentinization reactions and cooling of mantle rocks, resulting in high-pH environment with abundant dissolved hydrogen and methane drives hydrothermal venting and the formation of carbonate chimneys in the Lost City hydrothermal field (LCHF). Insight into the biogeochemistry of pervasive process in ultramafic subseafloor environments and profound discoveries with understanding the linkages between abiotic water-rock and microbial evolution is provided by such reactions.
