TGF beta 1 inhibits the formation of benign skin tumors, but enhances progression to invasive spindle carcinomas in transgenic mice

Article Abstract:

The secreted factor transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1) was proposed to play a significant role in epithelial carcinogenesis because of its ability to effectively regulate negative epithelial cell growth and modulate cellular phenotype. TGF beta 1 was found to display biphasic action during multistage skin carcinogenesis. It acted early as a tumor suppressor but later enhanced the malignant phenotype. A higher incidence of spindle cell carcinomas was also observed.

Complex formation and functional versatility of Mre11 of budding yeast in recombination

Article Abstract:

Meiotic recombination of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has two temporally coupled processes, production and processing of double-strand breaks (DSBs). Mre11 produces a complex with Rad50 and Xrs2, functioning as the binding core, and is involved in DSB processing. Even though these proteins also participate in DSB formation, Mre11 is not necessarily holding them. Mre11 has a DNA-binding site for DSB production and another site for DSB processing.
