Telomeres do D-loop-T-loop

Article Abstract:

Results of two studies provide evidences that contend the classical view on telomere structure that claims that the binding of telomere proteins to telomeric DNA results to linear DNA molecules. It was, instead, found that telomeres in mammalian cells end as large terminal loops called T loops. The two studies observed that long stretches of the double-stranded telomere DNA are loped around while the single-stranded terminus is tucked back inside the double-stranded DNA molecule.

Telomere dysfunction increases mutation rate and genomic instability

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the increased tumor incidence in telomerase null mice. The mutation rate in the telomerase absence in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been tested in examining the suggestion that telomere dysfunction induces genetic instability and the results are discussed.

Short telomeres, even in the presence of telomerase, limit tissue renewal capacity

Article Abstract:

A line of mTR (super +/-) mice on the CAST/Eij background, which has short telomeres, was generated to examine the dosage effect of telomerase. The results showed that short telomeres in mice that have normal telomerase levels cause an occult form of genetic disease.
