Telomeric heterochromatin propagation and histone acetylation control mutually exclusive expression of antigenic variation genes in malaria parasites

Article Abstract:

Malaria parasites use antigenic variation to avoid immune clearance and increase the duration of infection in the human host. Variation at the surface of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes is meditated by the differential control of a family of surface antigens encoded by var genes that is linked to the dynamic remodeling of chromatin.

Circadian regulator CLOCK is a histone acetyltransferase

Article Abstract:

The protein CLOCK, a central component of the circadian pacemaker, has histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. Chromatin remodeling is crucial for the core clock mechanism and identifies unforeseen links between histone acetylation and cellular physiology.

Complicated tails: Histone modifications and the DNA damage response

Article Abstract:

The role of chromatin in signaling by the DNA damage checkpoint pathway is discussed. Several ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complexes and covalent histone modifications are implicated in the response to double-stranded DNA breaks (DSBs).
