The Drosophila cell cycle kinase PAN GU forms an active complex with PLUTONIUM and GNU to regulate embryonic divisions

Article Abstract:

The pan gu (png), plutonium (plu), and giant nuclei (gnu) constiute a novel protein kinase complex that specifically regulates S-M cell cycles are presented which are required for PNG kinase activity and are phosphorylated by PNG in vitro. A model is developed in which GNU regulates embryonic cell cycles by promoting transient dimerization of a core PNG/PLU complex thereby stimulating PNG kinase activity.

A histone code in meiosis: The histone kinase, NHK-1, is required for proper chromosomal architecture in Drosophila oocytes

Article Abstract:

A mutation in Histone H2A kinase, nhk-1, in 'Drosophila' that leads to female sterility due to defects in the formation of the meiotic chromosomal structures is described. The role of Histone H2A phosphorylation with respect to the histone code hypothesis is analyzed and it is found that Histone H2A is required for acetylation of Histone H3 and Histone H4 in meiosis.

Roles of Bifocal, Homer, and F-actin in anchoring Oskar to the posterior cortex of Drosophila oocytes

Article Abstract:

An experiment is carried out showing that Homer and Bifocal act redundantly to promote posterior anchoring of the osk gene products. Two processes, one requiring Bifocal and an intact F-actin cytoskeleton and a second Homer but independent of intact F-actin, may act redundantly to mediate posterior anchoring of the osk gene products.
