Clostridium beijerinckii and Clostridium difficile detoxify methylglyoxal by a novel mechanism involving glycerol dehydrogenase

Article Abstract:

Glycerol dehydrogenase appears to detoxify methylglyoxal in Clostridium beijerinckii and C. difficile. Methylglyoxal is a potentially toxic substance produced during glycolysis.

Truncation of peptide deformylase reduces the growth rate and stabilizes solvent production in Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052

Article Abstract:

Four Tn1545 mutants of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 were found to harbor identical insertions within the fms gene which encodes peptide deformylase (PDF). This indicates that solvent production by C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 can be enhanced and stabilized since the Tn1545 insertion in fms causes a reduction in the growth rate of C. beijerinckii. Manipulation of the growth rate can lead to the mimicry of the mutant phenotype in the wild-type strain.

The ald gene, encoding a coenzyme A-acylating aldehyde dehydrogenase, distinguishes Clostridium beijerinckii and two other solvent-producing clostridia from Clostridium acetobutylicum

Article Abstract:

Research is conducted on the purification of an A-acylating aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) from Clostridium beijerinckii NRRL B593 to compare its properties with those of ALDHs purified from other clostridia. Results include the possibility of similar ALDHs presence in three different solvent-producing species.
