The forkhead domain gene unc-130 generates chemosensory neuron diversity in C. elegans

Article Abstract:

The forkhead domain gene unc-130 has been found to generate chemosensory neuron diversity in Caenorhabditis elegans. Distinct cell fates and thus varied functions in the chemosensory neurons are generated in a hierarchical way. That uses both lineage-dependent and independent mechanisms.

Ataxia telangiectasia mutated is essential during adult neurogenesis

Article Abstract:

Necessity for mutated ataxia telangiectasia (ATM) in adult neurogenesis is discussed. ATM is needed for normal cell fate determination and survival of neuronal in vitro and in vivo. Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is an autosomal recessive disease involving progressive neurodegeneration after normal brain development. The mutated gene is a serine protein kinase implicated in cell cycle regulation and DNA repair. Use of a running wheel to bring on voluntary exercise has a dramatic impact on neurogenesis in the rodent dentate gyrus. The study was the first to look at neurogenesis and survival in the adult dentate gyrus using the inbred 129SvEv mouse strain. The mice had a range of voluntary running.
