Mammalian fertilization: molecular aspects of gamete adhesion, exocytosis, and fusion

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the role of molecules in the mammalian fertilization process. Molecular involvement were observed in three steps including the binding of sperm to eggs, the fusion of sperm and eggs and the induction of the acrosome reaction by sperm. The mammalian fertilization process involves unique molecules such as ZP glycoproteins but the principles gained from somatic cells apply with respect to cellular adhesion, fusion and exocytosis.

Structure of a voltage-dependent K+ channel beta subunit

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize the structure of the voltage-dependent potassium channel's beta subunit proteins. Using X-ray crystallography, it was observed that beta subunit proteins have fold symmetric structures, It was also found that their subunits contain oxido-reductase enzymes with nicotinamide cofactors in their active sites. Moreover, findings show that the beta subunits' active sites directly interact with the K+ channels' voltage sensors.
