The role of the genome project in determining gene function: insights from model organisms

Article Abstract:

Transgenesis and other genetic techniques can improve the understanding of multilayered networks that control gene expression and differentiation when combined with total genome sequence and database information on gene expression patterns, mutant phenotypes and morphological changes during development. This knowledge makes it possible to reduce most of the 70,000 or so individual genes encoded by the human genome into a much smaller number of multicomponent core processes of known biochemical function.

The aftermath of scientific fraud

Article Abstract:

Cases of possible scientific misconduct involving research funded by the NIH and other agencies within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are brought to the attention of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) in Rockville, Maryland by the institute where the incident occurred. The most common action taken by ORI consists of barring the guilty individual from receiving federal funds for 3 to 4 years, but the extent of the punishment depends on the several criteria.

Janelia Farm: An experiment in scientific culture

Article Abstract:

Janelia Farm, the new research campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, is an ongoing experiment in the social engineering of research communities. It will have two initial areas of scientific focus, the identification of general principles that govern how information is processed by neuronal circuits and the development of imaging technologies and computational methods for image analysis.
