Timing and genetic regulation of commitment to sporulation in Bacillus subtilis

Article Abstract:

The issue of commitment to sporulation in Bacillus subtilis, a simple developmental system which entails the differentiation of two cell types called the prespore and the mother cell, was re-examined. Results revealed that commitment takes place immediately after septation, or the formation of the asymmetrically positioned division septum separating the prespore and the mother cell, but before the completion of engulfment. This disputes the previously believed point of commitment, the prespore engulfment by the mother cell. Results also affirm the involvement of the early cell-specific sigma factors sigma(super F) and sigma(super E) in the commitment of their respective cells.

Medium-dependent sporulation resulting from a mutation in the spollAB gene of Bacillus subtilis

Article Abstract:

A study of the effects of spollAB22 mutations shows that AB22 mutation causes defects in the interaction of sigma(super F) and sigma(super G) and retards sporulation. The spollAB protein of Bacillus subtilis encodes an anti-sigma factor that mediates the release of sigma(super F) in the prespore at the time of sporulation. Experimental results of phenotypic characterizing of spollAB22 mutation shows that there is no retardation in spore formation if the cultures are allowed to sporulate in liquid medium.

A 28 kbp segment from the spoVM region of the Bacillus subtilis 168 genome

Article Abstract:

The sequence of a 28 kbp part of DNA around the spoVM gene of Bacillus subtilis 168 was determined. The region consists of 27 ORFs, some of which have similar predicted products to proteins in sequence databases, especially those involved in macromolecular synthesis of nucleic acids, proteins and phospholipids. A likely serine protein phosphatase and a serine protein kinase are encoded by a pair of closely linked genes
