Usefulness of rpoB gene sequencing for identification of Afipia and Bosea species, including a strategy for choosing discriminative partial sequences

Article Abstract:

The usefulness of rpoB sequencing is investigated for differentiation and identification of Afipia and Bosea. As rpoB is large the region of variability in the sequence that are bordered by conserved sequences are determined with the objective of designing universal primers for amplification of a small but discriminative sequence for routine Afipia and Bosea identification.

Survival of environmental mycobacteria in Acanthamoeba polyphaga

Article Abstract:

The ability of a number of Mycobacterium spp. to survive in the trophozoites and cysts of Acanthamoeba polyphaga is investigated. Resutls show that all the species tested entered the trophozoites of A. polyphaga and survived at this location over a period of 5 days and all of them survived inside cysts for a period of 15 days.

Intervening sequence acquired by lateral gene transfer in Tropheryma whipplei results in 23S rRNA fragmentation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to demonstrate that an insertion sequence described in Tropheryma whipplei 23S rRNA is in fact an intervening microorganism using a Northern blot assay. Phylogenetic evidence that this mobile genetic element is acquired by lateral gene transfer from another enteric bacterium is presented.
