A few cosmopolitan phylotypes dominate planktonic archaeal assemblages in widely different oceanic provinces

Article Abstract:

Phylogenetic compositions of marine planktonic archaeal populations in different marine provinces were compared after samples from eight different environments were collected at two depths. Assemblages in very different oceanic provinces were studied. The operational taxonomic units defined were phylogenetically consistent. Clones of the same OLTU were related closely. Some phylotypes were ubiquitous. A tree containing one example of each OTU detected was made. The tree showed several clusters within two archaeal groups. Members of some of the clusters had different depth distributions.

Bacterial community structure associated with a dimethylsulfoniopropionate-producing north atlantic algal bloom

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that the Roseobacter lineage is involved in the organic sulfur compounds cycling produced within the bacterial community associated with the dimethylsulfoniopropionate-producing algal bloom. Data show that the bacterial phylotypes show variation with respect to the depth of the waters.

Vertical distribution and phylogenetic characterization of marine planktonic Archaea in the Santa Barbara channel

Article Abstract:

The waters of the Santa Barbara Channel contain archaeal rRNA and rDNA whose relative abundance is lower in surface waters as compared to deep waters. The bacteria are an active, abundant and dynamic component of the picoplankton. The rRNA of the euryarchaeal group of marine Archaea are present in surface waters, while the rRNA from the crenarchaeal group are present in the deeper waters. The members of the crenarchaeal group form a large part of the prokaryotic biomass in subsurface coastal waters. The archaeal rDNA clones belong to two groups.
