Visualization and detection of infectious coxsackievirus replication using a combined cell culture-molecular beacon assay

Article Abstract:

A generalized method is developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of infectious viruses from cell culture by directly visualizing newly synthesized viral RNA with molecular beacons (MBs). This method, when combined with nuclease-resistant MBs, is useful not only for real-time detection of infectious viruses but also to assess the life cycle of viral processing in vitro.

Altering the substrate specificity of organophosphorus hydrolase for enhanced hydrolysis of chlorpyrifos

Article Abstract:

The directed evolution of organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) to improve the hydrolysis of a poorly hydrolyzable substrate, chlopyrifos is described. The results indicate that the directed evolution of OPH and related enzymes may lead to potential biological solutions for efficient decontamination and detection of neurotoxic nerve agents.

Real-time nuclei acid sequence-based amplification assay for detection of hepatitis A virus

Article Abstract:

The development of an molecular beacons (MB)-based real-time nuclei acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) assay for the detection of hepatitis A virus is investigated. The NASBA assay successfully detected as few as 10 PFU from seeded lake water samples when combined with immunomagnetic separation.
