Cell wall chemical composition of Enterococcus faecalis in the viable but nonculturable state

Article Abstract:

The chemical composition of the cell wall of Enterococcus faecalis in the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state has been studied. This state was compared and contrasted to the exponentially growing and stationary states. Total cross-linking rose from 39% in growing cells to 48% in VBNC cells. This was found by analysis of the peptidoglycan chemical composition.

mRNA detection by reverse transcription-PCR for monitoring viability over time in an Enterococcus faecalis viable but nonculturable population maintained in a laboratory microcosm

Article Abstract:

Research examines the viable but nonculturable state of the bacteria at the molecular level for insights to develop a method for their detection. Data reveal that a gene is expressed during that state and the gene encoded mRNA activity is consistent with the resuscitation capability of the cells.

Adhesion of Enterococcus faecalis in the nonculturable state to plankton is the main mechanism responsible for persistence of this bacterium in both lake and seawater

Article Abstract:

Microbiological quality of both freshwater and marine water by detecting both culturable and nonculturable enterococci, which are present in water and adherent to the plankton, are discussed. Results show that the PCR assay is a powerful tool for detecting fecal indicators and pathogens in the environment, providing a much more sensitive method than culture.
