3 big airlines join others on Priceline

Article Abstract:

Online company Priceline.com has signed contracts with three of the largest US airlines and will now sell US Airways, American Airlines and United Airlines tickets through its electronic commerce Internet site. Priceline.com, which has been in existence since Apr. 1998, has become a useful consumer service, especially for leisure travellers. Business travellers are not as apt to use the service because many of the bargain tickets purchased require traveller flexibility concerning departure times and use of connecting flights. A traveller begins with Priceline by submitting a bid on a flight. If the bid is accepted the customer is required to purchase the ticket. In the beginning, many airlines refused to contract with Priceline because they insisted on keeping control of their inventory, but Priceline has convinced eight of the nine largest US airlines that its service aids the airlines in reducing the number of unsold seats. Priceline CEO Richard Braddock says the new contracts are a testament to the company's success.
