Airline is cleared for takeoff

Article Abstract:

Shuttle America is now cleared to offer scheduled passenger service. The start-up commuter airline passed finally its final hurdle with the Federal Aviation Administration this week and received its carrier operating certificate last friday, Nov. 6, 1998, during a ceremony held at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT. As a result, Shuttle America is now poised to start offering its services on Nov. 20, 1998. Shuttle America's inaugural flight will be from New Castle County Airport to Hartford, CT, through a 50-seater plane called Dash-8-300. Shuttle America intends to start service to Buffalo, NY, on Nov. 24, 1998, while flights to Norfolk, VA, will begin on Dec. 18, 1998.

Airline challengers taxi for takeoff

Three planned start-up carriers aim to launch air services before the start of the Sydney Olympics. Impulse Airline, Spirit Airlines and an unnamed arm of UK's Virgin Group are set to introduce budget-priced flights, competing with Ansett and Qantas.

The possible dangers facing the privatization of Sydney Airport, Australia, are discussed. If these dangers do not materialize, the airport could be under the control of a new operator by Mar 2001.
