America West contract war is over more than money; airline stresses costs, as flight attendants recall lean years

Article Abstract:

A strike by flight attendants at America West Airlines is possible when cooling-off period expires March 19. The employees are the lowest-paid in the industry, and were excluded from the company's profit sharing when the firm turned profitable in 1995. After four years of negotiations, flight attendants seek better reimbursement for the disputed profit sharing, and travel expenses, in addition to higher salaries. Executives say they are confident they will reach an accord with the flight attendants before the deadline.
