An international comparison of environmental management in operations: the impact of manufacturing flexibility in the U.S. and Germany

Article Abstract:

The effect of flexibility on Germany's level of ambition differ significantly with that of the United States. A sample obtained from 218 US and German manufacturing sites revealed that the existence of such difference can be greatly attributed to the type of regulation being pursued by the two countries. The US emphasizes a command-and-control system of regulation that concentrates on manufacturing process while Germany undertakes final product disposition and a closed loop materials' system.

The relationship between JIT manufacturing and performance in Mexican plants affiliated with U.S. companies

Article Abstract:

Analysis of a 49-item questionnaire, mailed to 504 US-affiliated Mexican manufacturing plants, showed that manufacturers who used the just in time inventory systems (JIT) had the best performance records. However, small Mexican plants may not obtain substantial production increases through JIT. Additional research is needed to establish the relationship of size and JIT to productivity and customer reaction to JIT.

A simulation analysis of sequencing alternatives for JIT lines using kanbans

Article Abstract:

The output of Just In Time (JIT) production lines is enhanced by the production sequences and processing times of an additional product. However, substantial increases in setup or processing times may affect the sequencing logic and increase throughput time. This would result in a production bottleneck which tends to control the entire production process.
