Banana crops devastated by Mitch

Article Abstract:

Produce experts in the US expect banana prices to increase as high as 89 cents a pound in the coming weeks as a consequence of Hurricane Mitch's recent visit in Central America. The banana industry, particularly Dole Food Co. and Chiquita Brands International, have been hit hard by Hurricane Mitch. According to Dole spokesman Tom Pernice, the hurricane resulted in the loss of around 25% of the firm's banana production. While Chiquita, which grows bananas in Honduras, expects to record a $50 million loss in the fourth quarter of 1998. The devastation could also affect shipments at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware since most of bananas shipped to the port come from Costa Rica and Honduras.
