Beware the software police!

Article Abstract:

The Software Publishers Assn. (SPA) actively enforces copyright laws prohibiting unauthorized duplication of software. In 1994 alone, the group filed a suit against 447 organizations and was able to get over $2.5 million in fines. An SPA investigation usually commences when an anonymous person, usually a disgruntled employee of the suspected company, reports the organization for software piracy on the association's piracy hotline. The SPA then verifies the tip by looking at the registration records that the target company has submitted to the publisher. It then sends a letter to the chief executive requesting compliance in a voluntary audit. If the company declines to comply with the audit, a non-voluntary audit is then conducted. Legal action against companies found in violation is then taken.

Beware the logo magic: buy the right software

Article Abstract:

Microcomputers which are purchased for the workplace should be selected based on the software which will be run on them. Prior to making a purchase, the buyer should determine the type of function which is to be performed and determine which software will best accomplish the task. Software packages have hardware requirements which must be satisfied in order for them to run. Training support is one criterion to consider when selecting software.
