Brazilians take to the Web with uncommon speed; region's giant is natural marketing target

Article Abstract:

Brazil's Star Media Network faces competition from major U.S. online service providers and Telefonica S.A. Brazil is an attractive market for expansion because of its huge size, single currency, single language and culture. Brazil is Latin America's most wired nation, with the number of people using the Internet growing by 130 percent in 1998 alone. In spite of economic problems and severe gaps between rich and poor, industry analysts expect the number of Internet users in Brazil to grow 60 to 100 percent over the next three years. Local companies like Universo Online have been responsible for much of the growth in Internet use. Brazil's telecommunications system has been energized since Brazil's telephone monopoly was privatized and opened to competition last year, and internet service providers have been undergoing consolidation. Psinet has acquired internet service providers in Brazil, and Telefonica recently bought a controlling stake in Nutec, the nation's second-largest service provider and portal. Competition and Internet use are expected to increase in Brazil.

For Kosovo's scattered refugees, the Internet is a lifeline

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Albanians who have fled the violence in Kosovo, Yugoslavia have found that the Internet and e-mail can help them locate family members. During the crises many families left with little notice and have no way of locating each other in far-away refugee camps other than through high tech methods. International relief organizations running the refugee camps have made Web pages listing names and posting photographs to enable the refugees to spot one another.
