British Petroleum is buyng Amoco in $48.2 billion deal

Article Abstract:

Amoco Corp. has been acquired by British Petroleum PLC for $48.2 billion in the oil industry's largest merger. Industry analysts said that the merger, which would create the world's third largest multinational oil company, could set off a new wave of consolidation in the oil industry. The North American headquarters for the new company would be located in Chicago, Illinois while the new company's board would be headquartered in London. British Petroleum, which will control 60% of the new company, will also assume 4.86 billion of Amoco's debt.

MCI to sell Internet assets; merger wins an approval

Article Abstract:

MCI Communications Corp. reached an agreement to sell its Internet assets to Cable & Wireless PLC for $1.75 billion in cash. The announcement led the Justice Department to approve the proposed $37 billion merger of WorldCom Inc. and MCI. Officials with MCI hastened to show that its merger with WorldCom would not be affected by the sale of its Internet assets. The asset sale is considered by the Justice Department to be the largest in merger history.
