British Telecom to acquire MCI's stake in joint venture

Article Abstract:

British Telecommunications P.L.C. will acquire MCI Communications Corporation's 24.9 percent stake in the companies' joint venture for $1 billion in cash. The deal ends a five year joint venture known as Concert which served the global communications needs of multinational corporations. The relationship went bad after a merger between the two companies failed over money issues. British Telecom reduced the value of the deal by $5 billion after MCI reported it could lose $800 million in its nascent local phone operation. British Telecom is now free to form a $10 billion joint venture with AT&T Corporation.

MCI reported to be near full Internet sale

Article Abstract:

Cable and Wireless PLC is close to an agreement to acquire MCI Communications Corp.'s entire Internet business for between $1.5 and $2 billion in cash. Industry analysts predict that the Justice Dept. and FCC would approve the $37 billion acquisition of MCI by Worldcom Inc. following the sale of MCIs Internet business, which has been viewed as giving the merger an unfair competitive advantage in the global telecommunications market. The deal includes a previous $625 million agreement in which Cable and Wireless agreed to acquire MCI's wholesale Internet business.
