Broad species protections upheld

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court ruled on Jun 29, 1995, by a vote of 6-3 that the government did have a right to prohibit logging in the Pacific Northwest to preserve the habitat of the northern spotted owl. The ruling upheld the 1973 Endangered Species Act. Some Republicans are seeking to modify that law.

Excerpts from the Supreme Court's decision to void Colorado law barring gay-rights protections

Article Abstract:

Excerpts from the rulings made by Justices Kennedy and Scalia in the May 20, 1996, court case of Romer v. Evans are presented. Kennedy ruled with the majority in overturning the Colorado amendment that barred the protection of gary rights. Scalia was one of three justices who dissented.

Stiffer sentences for hate-crimes upheld

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court, in Wisconsin versus Mitchell, ruled that states could impose tougher sentences for those convicted of hate crimes because hate crimes are more damaging to victims and society. The ruling was unanimous.
