Companies Gain in Health Cost Fight

Article Abstract:

In 1983 health care costs fell to a 6.4 per cent increase rate over the previous year. This has resulted from United States companies making an effort to reduce costs. Companies are establishing new cost-effective corporate health plans. Alternative methods of health care delivery are being considered. Among the most popular of these alternatives is the health maintenance organization (HMO). Competition to the HMO has arisen. It is called the preferred provider organization (PPO). It falls between conventional care and the HMO.

The job has been mainly a ceremonial position, a place for executives, too young to retire, who are no longer of any use to the company. But recently the role of vice-chairman has changed from mere figurehead to a new power at the top.
