Cyberdegrees; who needs a college campus? Just log in and start studying

Article Abstract:

A growing number of students are obtaining their degrees through a school offering on-line classes or through an on-line institution. Some 400 universities and colleges in the US are offering accredited programs on-line. Online schooling is popular with part-time students, many of whom are working full-time and supporting a family. Graduates from these programs report that their degrees hold up very well in the real world. Experts suggest that recent high-school graduates attend a traditional school to benefit from learning that is combined with socializing. On-line education is expanding in the professional and technical fields where individuals need to continually update and document their skills. Many traditional universities plan to expand their distance-learning programs to accomodate these individuals.

NASD maps war on claims on Internet; agency is developing way to search for phrases it considers suspicious

Article Abstract:

The National Association of Securities Dealers is developing a search engine to find unsubstantiated claims for stocks. The search engine would find phrases such as 'too good to be true' and 'the next Microsoft.' The tool could monitor securities chat forums, such as Silicon Investor or AOL's Motley Fool, for fraudulent or misleading information. The SEC has brought charges against nine companies for false claims about their stocks made on the Internet. Comparator Systems, a technology company that was heavily promoted on the Internet, was delisted by NASDAQ and settled SEC charges of asset inflation. Investors have become more suspicious of claims made on the Internet, but fraudulent stock promotions are still extremely common. The SEC is highly in favor of the NASD's search engine project.
