Deterministic approximations to co-production problems with service constraints and random yields

Article Abstract:

Multi-item, multi-period production planning problems are examined in environments with random yields and substitutable demands. Service constraints mark the production planning problems. Linear programs of the DP4-type are used as approximations of the original problem under constraints that are uniformly tighter. The model facilitates problem solving for periods of three or more, which serves as a helpful feature when solving rolling horizon problems. Basic heuristics are provided for the rolling horizon problem and the solution derived for the fixed-planning horizon problem was at a near-optimal level.

Multiproduct queuing networks with deterministic routing: decomposition approach and the notion of interference

Article Abstract:

An open queueing network with multiple product classes is considered. In each class, job routing is deterministic, and arrival and service times are independent and identically distributed. The decomposition method for such systems are examined and shown to provide parameter estimates that are unacceptably inaccurate. This approach is enriched by modeling a previously ignored phenomenon, the interference among products. The performance of the decomposition methodology is significantly improved by recognizing the effect of interference.

A mathematical programming approach to a deterministic Kanban system

Article Abstract:

An optimization model is presented for the Kanban system, a multi-stage inventory control and production scheduling mechanism. The model is designed to work in an assembly-type manufacturing setting. A general solution procedure is provided for the model, and three special examples offered which are of practical interest. Kanban models may be applied in the future in mixed-type and distribution-type production settings.
