Article Abstract:

Dictation equipment can cut correspondence costs by twenty-five per cent. Specific steps are recommended for preparing for dictation, such as writing down subject headings, for the proper use of dictating equipment for easier transcription, and for follow-up proofreading. A comparison chart with features of various makes of dictating machines is provided. Among the features included are playback, speed control, automatic volume control, and conference recording.

The Realistic VSC-1000 portable cassette recorder from Tandy Australia Limited offers 'speed listening' technology. Playback can be adjusted from eighty per cent to twice normal speed. Speech pitch can be adjusted so that there is no distortion in voice quality. The recorder, costing $169.95 (Australia), operates on AC with DC adapter ($9.98) and provides pause control and tape counter among other features.

The Super Vision III is a dictation monitoring system for centralized word processing (WP) systems. The Super Vision can keep track of the progress of each piece of dictation or account for the use of the WP system on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The Multi-Sort program can sort and report the amount of dictation from individuals or departments and the amount of transcription done by operators.
