Article Abstract:

Several developments in the investment services industry during 1st qtr 1999 were noted. The arrival of the new year was preceded by the rejuvenation of the investment sector in the last quarter of 1998 as the global market stabilizes. Newsmakers for the first months of 1999 included the launch of the euro, the announcement by Goldman Sachs Group of its plan to make an initial public offering, and the technical difficulties of fledgling online brokers. An assessment of financial performance in 1998 and predictions for 1999 are also discussed.

The ever-growing options for investing

Article Abstract:

The most significant developments in the brokerage and asset management business are the globalization of the industry and the expansion of investable funds. Brokerage houses also have to deal with other issues, including the need to reduce earnings cyclicality, the onslaught of online traders, and the infiltration of commercial banks in the investment business. Asset managers also have to face challenges unique to their business, such as the growth of mutual funds, reforms in the distribution system, and the demand on fees.

Issues concerning the importance of forecasting to the development of the economy are discussed. Particular attention is given to the economic forecasts for the year 2000. It is emphasized that forecasts could influence real developments.
