Election reform bill enacted

Article Abstract:

The Italian parliament approved a compromise political reform bill on Aug 4, 1993. The bill would allot 75% of parliament seats to distinct constituencies and 25% according to proportional representation. The old strictly proportional system was blamed for political corruption.

Center-left coalition wins Italy's general election; Prodi expected to form government

Article Abstract:

The Olive Tree coalition received 45% of the vote for the Chamber of Deputies and 41% of the vote for the Senate in elections held Apr 21, 1996 in Italy. Olive Tree leader Romano Prodi will likely become the premier if he forms an alliance with the Reconstructed Communists.

New premier wins confidence vote

Article Abstract:

Italy's parliament gave Premier Carlo Azeglio Ciampi a vote of confidence on May 7, 1993. This gave Ciampi the opportunity to act on his proposal to reform the electoral system in Italy by Aug 1993.
