Exploring the dynamics of learning alliances

Article Abstract:

Firms are increasing their reliance on learning alliances to improve their competitiveness in the global marketplace. In learning alliances, firms are able to learn new skills from their partners. While learning alliances have become routinary in many industries, some have become downright failures and did not result in greater competitive advantage for the parties concerned. To ensure the benefits of learning alliances, firms should choose a good partner, identify the importance of new knowledge, assimilate and then apply it in their commercial endeavors.

What it means to succeed: personal conceptions of career success held by male and female managers at different ages

Article Abstract:

Managers' personal definitions of career success are analyzed to offer the basis for a conceptualization of what success means to individuals. Data were obtained by interviewing 36 managers in a leading UK telecommunications firm, composed of 18 men and 18 women, divided into three age groups: the twenties, the thirties and the forties. Four orientational categories were determined based on how managers defined what career success meant to them. These are the Climbers, the Experts, the Influencers and the Self-Realizers.
