Australian Automotive Industry will be transformed from an old-economy sector to an internationally important exporter and expand Asia-Pacific markets due to growth in the automotive markets of North America and Western Europe. Australia is the best choice for locating a southern hemisphere R&D centre as Australia has cheaper R&D compared to Europe or North America.

Stronger housing and uncertainty about interest rates are making life difficult for forecasters to predict where the economy is heading. Despite Australia's annual gross domestic product (GDP) slowing to just 2% in the June quarter, the consensus of economists surveyed by BRW is for a rebound in GDP growth to 2.8% in 2003-04.
