Fast money in a changing world

Article Abstract:

The increasing wealth of Australia's richest people reflects a healthy economy and rising new industries. On Business Review Weekly's Rich 200 list, individual fortunes rose 17.2%. Property fortunes, once accounting for nearly a third of the source of wealth, now account for 20%. Telecommunications, information technology, and other services now account for nearly 7%. Women have entered the ranks in record numbers, with 15 appearing on the list with a combined wealth of $1.67 billion.

Tourists, cars and telcos will keep us ticking; local demand for vehicles is strong and growth forecasts for many foreign markets are healthy

Article Abstract:

The Australian economy is getting a boost from the steady growth in tourism, automobiles and telecommunications. This is important because the country expects downturns in housing and construction by 2000. Activity around the Sydney Olympics is helping employment, construction and tourism, but that is a short-term boost. Manufacturers with specialty items should look more towards Latin American markets to offset declining import demands from Asian countries.

Now that you have made it, perhaps the time has come to give it away

Article Abstract:

Australians rank below Americans, Canadians and others, in their generosity toward community causes. Australia's high earners are not considered very generous, despite the country's charitable trusts established by wealthy families. Philanthropy Australia Inc's Elizabeth Cham notes that well-thought-out contributions, even small ones, can have a large impact. She urges Australia's wealthy to think about the community contributions they can make.
