Fedex pilots decide to end strike threat; delivery will not be disrupted next month

Article Abstract:

FedEx has won its current battle with pilots who wanted to strike before the busy holidays. The pilots group has now accepted less than the company had offered on October 30, 1998. Once that offer was declined by the pilots, the company invested in outsourcing in order to keep doing business during the threatened strike. Now there is a signed contract which postpones further talks until after the first of the year. Pilots have agreed to work overtime rather than lose their jobs entirely.

The pay rate that Fedex pilots receive has not kept up with their peers, and yet, they pleaded with union officials to give in, as if to say that any working conditions for the next 60 days would be better than no job at all. Founder Fred Smith seemed to realize that to divide the pilots was to conquer them. Not having the support of the other 140,000 Fedex employees didn't help their cause. Nor did an inexperienced union. Smith called their bluff and won again this time.
