Fiber optics: getting cheap enough to start rewiring America

Article Abstract:

The price of fiber-optic cabling is falling, and as a result telephone companies are planning to run the cabling to US homes and businesses and offer a wide range of new services. One strand of fiber optic cabling can carry 16,000 telephone calls simultaneously, compared to 24 calls per copper wire. As a result, such services as high-definition television can be sent over fiber-optic cables. Wiring a house with fiber-optic cabling still costs about $3,000, about twice the cost of copper cabling. But one market researcher predicts 15 percent of all US homes will have fiber-optic cabling by 1999.

Sometimes a good excuse is just not enough

Article Abstract:

Research have shown that different factors influence the receptiveness of an audience to an excuse or an explanation given by someone who committed a mistake. People who have persistently experienced injustice in the past or who saw people belonging to the same social group received unjust treatment are more likely to have lingering feelings of injustice even after an excuse or an explanation is given. This is particularly true for women and people of color.

Social Security: Is a Patchup Enough?

Article Abstract:

Looking at the Social Security program, the immediate outlook is that it needs some patching up, but the long- term picture is a different story. It appears that major surgery may be required. People on Social Security think that they have paid for it, but in reality those now collecting benefits collected what they paid into it in the first year or so. It was set up as a pay-as-you go plan, but amendments to the initial program have depleted funds.
