High-Tech Vision

Article Abstract:

Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company (3M Corp.) is showing a new outlook in its products and directions. Its emphasis right now is on new technologies. The recession affected its earnings, but the first quarter earnings in 1984 are up 11.4 percent over last year. Operating profit margins were up by sixteen percent. Second quarter profit margins are expected to be even more. 3M believes electronics and information technology products will double their profit margins within five years. 3M's new product is an optical storage disk. These disks will be able to store up to 80,000 pages of text. There is great competition for this new product, though 3M has already invested millions to develop the product.
