How the Largest Bus Company Hedges Its Fuel Costs

Article Abstract:

The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) runs two thousand buses in four counties daily. Passenger use has increased by almost one-third million in the last two years. One and a half million people are estimated to use the service, which travels a total of about one hundred and eight million miles yearly. Fuel amounts to just under one-tenth of SCRTD's expenditures. SCRTD was the premiere transit operation to become interested in hedging heating oil futures. Diesel fuel bill uncertainty is a primary concern for transit operations. Since there is no futures market for diesel, heating oil contracts have garnered SCRTD's attention. In 1982, SCRTD realized that the two price movements were at greater variance than formerly thought. Their 1982 program made over a one-half million dollar profit.
