Human resources management

Article Abstract:

Performance appraisal systems are being evaluated and updated in an effort to make them more effective, accurate and inclusive. Recent evaluation research has examined the change from personality trait rating to performance-based rating, changes from free essay or alphabetical-numerical rating forms to 'controlled written narrative', and the inclusion of employee feedback provisions. Verbal and non-verbal communication skills in interviewing have been evaluated. Other research has examined the supervisor's effect on performance rating and the appraisal process and mid-life crisis.

Manpower matters: the use of assessment centres

Article Abstract:

Assessment centers, which employ several techniques of evaluation, are effective means for businesses to screen candidates. The centers are criticized for being too time consuming and expensive. Some corporations are using modified or slimmed-down centers as an alternative. However, the expense of such centers is often offset by the value of acquiring quality management.
