Digital, Mitsubishi negotiate accord to make U.S. company's Alpha chip

Article Abstract:

DEC and Mitsubishi Electric Corp are negotiating a contract under which Mitsubishi would manufacture DEC's new Alpha microprocessor for sale to rival computer companies who license the Alpha from DEC. The contract would help DEC's efforts to increase the Alpha's popularity by licensing it to other computer makers. Computer companies usually want to be sure they can get a chip from a second source before signing licensing agreements. The negotiations are expected to be completed by mid-Apr 1993, a DEC spokesman says. DEC expects to make the reduced-instruction-set-computing (RISC) Alpha chip a cornerstone of its computers into the next decade. So far, computer manufacturers Kubota Ltd and Cray Research Inc have licensed the chip.

U.S. Memories says IBM to grant access to chip-making data

Article Abstract:

U.S. Memories enters into an agreement with IBM to acquire access to the manufacturing process and design for IBM's 4M-bit memory chips. U.S. Memories is building a plant in the US to manufacture DRAM chips. Seven companies have promised to provide equity for the plant's construction, but so far no formal equity commitments have been obtained. Apple and Sun Microsystems Inc have declined to join the venture because they reportedly have an ample supply of DRAMs.
