IT pushes Canberra towards privacy laws; the federal government has backed down once, but high-tech companies want protection on data as a boost to global exchange

Article Abstract:

High-technology companies and other organizations are putting pressure on the federal government to legislate to protect the private sector's privacy in regards to data, after the government announced in 1996 that it would instead expect privacy protection to be established by firms on a voluntary basis. Other businesses are concerned about the cost of compliance if the government decides to legislate to protect privacy.
