Memory matters

Article Abstract:

Understanding the many different types of computer memory is critical when upgrading or purchasing a new system. The three basic types of computer memory are video memory, system memory and processor cache memory. System memory stores programs and data while in use. The main types of system memory are Dynamic RAM (DRAM), Fast Page Mode RAM, Enhanced Data Out DRAM, Static RAM and Cached RAM or Enhanced DRAM. Video memory is specifically designed for moving graphics and includes video RAM, Windows RAM and 3D RAM. Processor cache memory is essentially high-speed RAM blocks located between a system's standard RAM storage and microprocessor. Primary caches are the fastest type of cache and reside on the microprocessor. Secondary cache, also called Level 2 cache, resides on different chips. Processor caches can be "write-back," "write-through" or "pipeline-burst."
