Japan's ruling party loses parliament majority; premier Miyazawa resigns

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost control of the lower house of the Japanese Diet in elections held Jul 18, 1993. It was the first time since 1955 that the LDP did not gain a majority in the Japanese parliament. Premier Kiichi Miyazawa resigned Jul 22, 1993, after his party's defeat.

Japanese Premier Murayama resigns; Parliament elects Hashimoto to succeed him

Article Abstract:

Murayama, Japan's premier since June 1994, resigned on Jan 5, 1996, due to continuing economic problems. Trade and Industry Minister Hashimoto succeeded Murayama on Jan 11, 1995, and appointed a new 21-member cabinet. He is the head of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Japanese parliament elects Hosokawa premier; seven-party coalition assumes power

Article Abstract:

Morihiro Hosokawa was elected premier of Japan on Aug 6, 1993, by Japan's Diet, ending the rule of the Liberal Democratic Party, which had been in power since 1955. A listing of the members of Hosokawa's cabinet is presented.
