Knott's tax tangle

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia has given evidence in 2003, that the outgoing chairman of the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, David Knott, was involved in the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz under a failed sales tax avoidance scheme in September 1981. Knott accused media outlets of a smear campaign after reports that he was once in partnership with David Collie, who was involved in large-scale sales tax avoidance.

The options that Solomon Trujillo, the new chief executive officer of Australian telecommunications giant Telstra, has for reviving the company are discussed. Telstra will have to sell its stake in Foxtel. Apart from Foxtel option, floating directories business, Sensis is another step Trujillo will consider. By carrying out such changes, Telstra will become vibrant enough for privatization.

The steps that were taken and the future plans of Sol Trujillo, chief executive of the communications company Telstra Corporation Ltd., to sell the company for $30 billion, are presented. Telstra's half-year profit has increased by 4.6 percent to $4.4 billion.
