Labor bides time on FTA

Article Abstract:

The issues concerned with the passage of the free-trade agreement (FTA) with the US are delineated. Labor's FTA spokesman, Senator Stephen Conroy believes that the committee's final report with regard to Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), the intellectual property changes on the usage of open source code by the local software designers, quarantine issues and the role of scientific assessments on decisions relating to US imports, and the overall economic benefits of the FTA, may be delayed.

Business wants states out of IR

Article Abstract:

The proposed reforms to Industrial Relations (IR) regulations in Australia are discussed. The government wants a unitary system absorbing the industrial powers of the states in the commonwealth. According to Katie Lahey, chief executive of the Business Council of Australia the business community too wants the states to surrender their IR powers to the Commonwealth. Such consolidation of powers is also expected to facilitate standardization of corporate powers.
