Laptops: little, light - and easy to filch

Article Abstract:

Theft of laptop computers is on the rise, as their popular characteristics, including small size, light weight and ease of use, make them easy targets. In 1995, 208,000 laptops were stolen, almost double the number of desktop systems stolen that year, and significantly more than in 1994, when 150,000 laptops were stolen. The distinctive carrying cases make it easy for thieves to identify laptops, and employees on the road are vulnerable, especially at airports. Laptops in offices and cars are also stolen, with some thieves searching entire office buildings for open offices from which they can take the computers. Since most protection devices involve anchoring a laptop to a desk, reducing its usefulness, companies are focusing on protecting the information on laptops by using password protection on their files or by installing software that allows users to disable the hard drive and freeze the keyboard before they travel.

The Wisdom Council: self-organising systems tool

Article Abstract:

The Talking Stick and the Wisdom Council, tools from Native American Earth Wisdom Teachings, can be seen as having considerable relevance for western organizations. The use of a Talking Stick can significantly improve the quality of discussion at meetings, as well as ensuring that everybody's views are listened to properly. Similarly, the Wisdom Council encourages agreement, listening and respect. These techniques could play a useful role in allowing companies to make best use of all the knowledge and wisdom of their employees.
