Lessons learned from unsuccessful internationalization attempts: Examples of multinational retailers in Chile

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to understand the reasons behind the failure of internationalized efforts of retailers who expanded to foreign markets by using an institutional perspective. Unsuccessful retail internationalization to the Chilean market by major US and European firms was examined and part of the problem appeared to be the unwillingness of the firms to embed themselves in the broader social network and their defiance of institutional pressures from the local business community.
